The African Penguin, a beloved symbol of South Africa's rich biodiversity, is under severe threat. Over the past century, this endearing species has faced a catastrophic decline, with a staggering 99% drop in population. Today, fewer than 10,000 breeding pairs remain in the wild1. If we do not act now, we risk their complete disappearance by 20352.

Why Are African Penguins Disappearing?

The reasons for their decline are many, but the most significant threats include:

  • Overfishing: Critical food sources like sardines and anchovies are being depleted, leaving penguins struggling to find enough to eat3.
  • Climate Change: Changes in ocean temperatures and currents disrupt the availability of fish, further challenging their survival3.
  • Habitat Destruction: Historical guano harvesting has devastated their natural nesting sites4.

Recent Steps Towards Conservation

In response to the dire situation, the South African government announced in 2024 that it would protect key foraging areas around six main breeding colonies from commercial and recreational fishing for a decade4. This initiative is a significant step, but it is not enough. The current protected areas do not cover all the critical foraging ranges that are essential for the survival of the species.

What More Can Be Done?

Expanding the no-fishing zones and implementing a complete ban on penguin hunting are critical next steps. We must also strengthen monitoring to ensure these rules are enforced. Engaging local communities and supporting alternative livelihoods can help lessen the economic impact of these conservation measures.

How Can You Help?

The time to act is now. Every day counts in the race to save the African Penguin from extinction. By signing our petition, you are not just lending your voice to a cause; you are taking a stand for biodiversity and the preservation of our planet's unique wildlife.

Sign the petition and join us in urging the South African government to expand protection efforts and ensure these charismatic birds thrive for generations to come.

The Petition:

To the Government of South Africa and the South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment,

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the critical decline in the population of the African Penguin (Spheniscus demersus), a treasured species native only to the coasts of South Africa and Namibia. Recent studies have shown a catastrophic drop in their numbers, with fewer than 10,000 breeding pairs remaining. This represents a decline of 99% over the last century, putting the species at imminent risk of extinction.

In January 2024, the South African government commendably announced the closure of penguin foraging ranges around six main breeding colonies to both commercial and recreational fishing, for a period of 10 years. This decision, based on the 2023 scientific report by an international panel of experts, is a crucial step in the right direction.

However, we believe that more comprehensive measures are urgently needed to ensure the survival of the African Penguin:

  1. Expand the Protected Areas: We urge the expansion of no-fishing zones beyond the current perimeters to cover all known foraging ranges essential for the survival of the species. The existing zones, as demarcated, may not be sufficient to facilitate the recovery of the penguin populations as they do not encompass the full extent of the critical foraging areas.
  2. Implement a Full Ban on Penguin Hunting: Immediate legislation should be enacted to prohibit all forms of penguin hunting across their entire habitat. While penguin hunting may not be widespread, any existing allowances contribute to the pressures on a species already on the brink of extinction.
  3. Increase Monitoring and Enforcement: Enhanced monitoring of the protected areas should be implemented to ensure compliance with the new regulations. This includes deploying more resources for patrol and surveillance to prevent illegal fishing and hunting activities.
  4. Support Community Engagement and Alternative Livelihoods: We recognize the socio-economic impact of these protective measures on local communities. It is vital to develop and support alternative livelihoods that do not depend on the exploitation of natural resources critical to penguin survival.
  5. Fund Continued Research and Rehabilitation Efforts: Continued funding for research on penguin ecology and behavior, as well as support for rehabilitation programs like those conducted by SANCCOB, are essential for the recovery of the species.

The African Penguin is not only a symbol of our natural heritage but also plays a significant role in the biodiversity of our coastal ecosystems. Their extinction would not only be a profound loss to biodiversity but would also signify a failure to protect the environment that future generations of South Africans will inherit.

We call on you to take immediate and effective action to secure a future for the African Penguin. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that this iconic species survives and thrives for generations to come.

Your action can make a difference. Please, act now to save the African Penguin.

Sincerely,
