Rescued Kitten

Rescued Kitten

Our kennel manager found this lone black baby kitten in the bushes, hollering for his life. When I reached into his cage to pet him, he gave me a very tiny "Halloween Cat" and baby hiss. I knew he was the boy for me. Now Fred lives with his siblings, Ricky and Lucy.

"Sweet" Sadie

"Sweet" Sadie

After our dog Samantha passed away @ 17 years old I could not bare going home to an empty home. So I kept visiting a kill shelter which was about a 45 minute drive, looking for a new puppy. One day I came across a litter of pups that had just been dropped off but they were in quarantine until they got fixed, a check up and their shots. I kept going back daily until they were released to be adopted. I was first in line to adopt a puppy they named Sweetie, a 6 week Lab, Boxer mix. I was so emotional waiting in line to do the paperwork people thought I was crazy. She and I hugged the whole way home where she was welcomed her to our family. Our "Sweet" Sadie is now about 4 years old and brings us more joy than I can express, I only hope her brother and sisters got a good home too and are not tied up to a tree in someone's back yard. Sadie is the queen of our home and enjoys sleeping in our bed while were are at work, when we come home we go for a walk then we usually swim together in the pool, she loves the pool. Sadie also loves boating, going to the beach and she is gentle with our cats too, all 3 of them.
To anyone who has lost pet I highly recommend jumping back in and getting a new one, I'm not sure who is luckier the pet that is saved from a shelter or the human who receives their love and companionship.

Healing two broken hearts

Healing two broken hearts

My niece and I went to our local shelter, Noah's Ark in Carlsbad, NM. We were delivering treats and toys for the dogs and cats. Of course we had to visit each one and one little dog caught our attention. It was a small chihauhau sitting in the middle of this huge cage and he was at least 14 years old. This is rare to see a dog this age, so I asked the employees why he was there. "Chico's" "Mommy" had been moved into an assisted living facility and because it happened so quickly, the only option she had was to take him to Noah's Ark. My heart just went out to this little guy and his "Mommy". I asked the shelter to call her and see if I adopted him if I could take him to see her. I received a call back telling me that his Mommy was thrilled. So on Monday I went to adopt him which the shelter said it was a rescue. They gave me all his little things his "Mommy" brought for him and the very next day I took him to see his "Mommy". It was so touching and now I have the love of a little old man of a dog and a wonderful lady who I am glad to call a friend.

If anyone sees an older dog in a shelter, ask for the story, then take the precious little old dog (or cat) home so his/her final days are filled with love.

Lost Dog becomes Loyal Companion

Lost Dog becomes Loyal Companion

I found Buddy at the local animal shelter, smiling so big I could not resist his personality . His long body and short legs from being a mix of cattle dog and Corgi make him a corkscrew shape full of energy. After waiting 2 hrs in the early a.m. at the shelter door, I was able to take this funny dog home and he has become my constant companion. He is now best friends with my senior cat. Thanks to the shelters who make adoptions possible.

My little man

My little man

Scooter, my little man...came to us (me, and 2 grown female labs: Maggie and AnnaBell) by chance. I had gotten a tooth ache, went to dentist and was asked in the chair if I wanted another dog...without any thought I said 'sure!' ...huh? Scooter was only 7mos old, but his first mommy and daddy (an elderly couple that saved up all their change to get him) had gotten sick and they both died within months of one another. I brought him home to an ALL girl house, he fit in great...He is now the boss of the house...I can't imagine life without him. Maggie is 11yrs old and AnnaBell is 6 yrs old...AnnaBell and Scooter run and chase all day. I've NEVER let a dog sleep in bed with me...until Scooter! If he sleeps with one of his sisters, I miss him leaning on me.

Bonnie and Clyde.... gangsters that have taken our hearts

Bonnie and Clyde.... gangsters that have taken our hearts

On my birthday in 2007, my beautiful chocolate lab was hit by a car and killed. I was heartbroken and distressed. For days I couldn't sleep, and cried all the time. My husband, in an effort to stop the whining, and get me out of bed, went to the local shelter looking for someone to try and fill my Jersey-girl's paws. There were two puppies left from a litter that had been born 8 weeks prior at the shelter. They were polar opposites in looks, one girl and one boy. He couldn't decide, so since he knew someone there they allowed him to come home with the pups so I could make the choice. Now I have two. Bonnie (the white spotted with brindle patches on the eyes) and Clyde (the red) have been life savers. My two little angels.
Life hasn't been easy health wise for them. Since day one they've had one ailment or another ranging from Mange to Luxated patella surgery (Bonnie) to having to have a root canal and crown (Clyde), but fortunately Mommy loves them and wants them to be happy and healthy. Now at Just over 2 years old they seem to finally be healthy, and most importantly happy. They are inseperable and have completed our family.

A forever home for Blondie

A forever home for Blondie

We were looking into greyhound adoption groups and went to a pet store with an adoption day we thought was for greyhounds. We were wrong, but that's where we found Blondie. Her foster mom had nursed this 10-month old Afghan thru 5 months in a cast to heal a broken leg, and the dog was a bit overwhelmed with all the activity in the store. We visited her at her foster home and she warmed up to us pretty quickly. Then we "borrowed" her for a week long home visit and she never left! She has a few health issues but we've learned to work within those limits. She can once again run like the wind and as a 1 year old, loves us to play "chase the (dog with the) toy" in the back yard. We love her!

A second chance for Chewie!

A second chance for Chewie!

I found Chewie at Animal Welfare Association in NJ. He had been there a month and no one showed any interest in him. As soon as I seen him, I knew he was the one. His previous owner didn't want him anymore and admitted to keeping him locked in the basement for most of his life. Sure, he is a little odd to look at but he has A LOT of love to give! Now he is living the life, here in our home with our two other dogs and he couldn't be happier!

Happy Retirement

Happy Retirement

We had lost our previous dog to cancer, and one rainy day we went to the SPCA "just to look" at the dogs. We saw a very alert dog with a little gray around his eyes, watching our every move. His ears stuck out to the side and we called them "Yoda ears." We couldn't believe with his energy and strength that he was 11 1/2! He had spent his whole life with one owner whose work situation had changed and who could no longer keep him. At first we thought we shouldn't adopt a dog that old, but we spent a good deal of time with him that day and were drawn to him. A friend named Sully told us of the joys of adopting an older dog, and a week later we went and adopted our new family member! We named him Sully, too; a few treats were all it took to learn a new name and he had made the switch in about an hour!

He loves meeting people and dogs and has never met any he doesn't like. He is now 14, and while his walks are much shorter and he much mellower, he is still enjoying his retirement.
